blogawards

The South African Blog Awards is back this year and dontbeapassenger is competing under the Old Mutual Best Green Blog category. In order to get to the next round we need a good few more people to back us, so we’d like to appeal to our green readers for nominations.

All you have to do is click that big rectangular badge on the right of your screen, which will take you to the SA Blog Awards website. From there you’ll have to nominate a minimum three blogs in any category (blog.dontbeapassenger.com being one of them obviously), then enter your email address and the security code you’ll receive. That’s all!

Dontbeapassenger could really benefit from this type of exposure, so if you like what we do please take 2 minutes of your time to help us out.

Thanks in advance!

- Team DBAP

The 26th winner of the ‘Small Things Make a Big Difference’ competition is Lee-sa Harmse – congratulations! Here’s her idea for those whose minds need a bit of refreshing:

Don’t buy, swap!

Because of our consumerist culture and the constant slew of product advertising, most of us are quick to get rid of old things and buy new replacements. This applies to everything from clothes to furniture, appliances and books. Lee-sa’s small idea of a swap party could help all of us remedy this excessive and wasteful way of life!

The Small Things prize consists of a copy of Simon Gear’s book Going Green as well as a T-shirt designed exclusively for dontbeapassenger by Mingo Lamberti.

Keep those green ideas coming and you could be the winner of the next giveaway! Congratulations once again to Lee-sa for sharing her winning idea!

Arctic update

Tuesday, 10 August 2010

DBAP_postcardfront

Early on in June we announced Deon Robbertze as the lucky winner of the Arctic trip for two. Now we are happy to report that Deon and his fiancee are in the icy region at this very moment, and are due to return later this week.

We chatted to Deon right before he left on Sunday 1 August and the eco conscious Creative Director assured us that he’d be taking stacks of pictures and video footage to document the adventure.

Deon certainly had done his homework and spent the weeks leading up to the trip researching the Arctic and learning about the plants, animals and environment he was to encounter. He told dontbeapassenger that he is fascinated by this unique part of Earth, and that his experience would no doubt be a life-changing one.

We’ll be interviewing Deon shortly after his return – is there anything in particular you think we should ask him?

In celebration of Women’s Month dontbeapassenger looked to profile a strong South African woman making a difference in the field of environmental sustainability – and Mariette Liefferink was the perfect choice.

The mother of four and grandmother of two is the current CEO of the Federation for a Sustainable Environment. She has spent many years lobbying for a multitude of green causes, and serving on a number of environmental boards and task teams (see the long list here).

Raw deal

Friday, 6 August 2010

The 25th winner of the ‘Small Things Make a Big Difference’ competition is Melanie – congratulations! Here’s her idea for those whose minds need a bit of refreshing:

Substitute a cooked meal with a raw one

Cooking food is a vital yet relatively resource intensive process. As well as the water and electricity which goes into preparing a large hot meal, we must also be mindful of what goes into getting food from where it is produced to our supermarket shelves.

You can read all about the benefits of raw food and the science behind it at  Raw Food Life. No doubt we could all decrease our carbon footprints and increase our health and well being by eating more  raw unprocessed foods!

The Small Things prize consists of a copy of Simon Gear’s book Going Green as well as a T-shirt designed exclusively for dontbeapassenger by Mingo Lamberti.

Keep those green ideas coming and you could be the winner of the next giveaway! Congratulations once again to Melanie for sharing her winning idea!
