Make a difference with us

Wednesday, 8 September 2010

We started dontbeapassenger at the beginning of this year with the intial aim of creating a community of environmentally conscious and motivated people, and to raise and discuss issues of sustainability within this group. Our plan for the last few months of 2010 is to become more active and make a difference on a slightly bigger scale. We can’t wait to take the next step, and we hope you’ll join us!

Happy Arbour Day!

Wednesday, 1 September 2010

Today we celebrate not only the first day of Spring but also Arbour Day! It’s a day to remember the importance of trees and forrestry. 1 September marks the start of National Arbour Week which runs until 7 September. During this time all South Africans are encouraged to learn more about our indigenous trees and their significant role in our environment.

Each year different types of tree are planted to commemorate Arbour Day. Usually two species are selected, one common tree and one rare one. 2010′s common tree is the Fever Tree, aka Koorsboom , aka Acacia xanthophloea. This year there are three rare species – Cape Gardenia, Bell Gardenia and Tonga Kerrie.

Jack Johnson invites fans to beach clean-up

Monday, 24 May 2010

Here’s a fine example of a green celeb putting his money, or rather his music, where his mouth is.

Today Jack Johnson – Hawaiian singer, surfer, and generally chilled out guy – will perform a live concert at the Santa Monica Pier in California to promote his new album To the Sea.

Free tickets to the performance were handed out to the first 2000 fans to sign up for a 2 hour beach clean-up, which took place on Saturday. Johnson encouraged fans to support Heal the Bay, an organisation dedicated to recovering and preserving the coastal environment of California.

Today’s concert will kick off the lanch tour of To the Sea, which will officially be released on 1 June. Like he did in 2008, Johnson will donate 100% of his profits to charity.

Now that’s our kind of celeb! Dontbeapassenger will soon introduce an exciting feature where we interview the who’s who of South Africa and find out just how green our local personalities are.

In the meantime enjoy the official music video for “You and Your Heart”, a single off Jack’s new album:
