keep boiled water in a flask
Submitted by Leana Knapp – Thursday, 05 August 2010
Pour leftover boiled water from the kettle into a flask. It takes less electricity to boil water that’s already hot when you need to boil water again (and you might not even need to boil it again).
Who would also like a cup of coffee?
Submitted by Leana Knapp – Thursday, 05 August 2010
When making yourself a cup of coffee or tea, check who else in the office or at home would also like to have. Then only put that amount of water in the kettle and next time they might offer you a cup and you’ll have saved electricity!
Recycle by assisting the bin scratchers
Submitted by Leana Knapp – Thursday, 05 August 2010
Check what the “Bin Scratchers” in your area are collecting (paper, plastic, glass etc) and put it in a separate bag next to the bin on bin day – it will lessen the frustration of them leaving dirt on the pavement and that way you’ve done your part.
Community recycle
Submitted by Leana Knapp – Thursday, 05 August 2010
A lot of people would love to recycle but just don’t have the time to go to the different collection sites.
Get the people in your street to work together and take turns or appoint one person to collect once a week.
Eat more raw
Submitted by Melanie – Tuesday, 03 August 2010
Try and substitute one raw meal for a cooked one daily and save on gas/electricity, dirty pots and hot water for dishwashing! Plus, you’ll be investing positively in your good health!
dont abuse-reuse
Submitted by nafisa – Tuesday, 03 August 2010
I reuse 90% of all the product packaging i buy. Cans/bottles become storage containers, plastic is used for keeping food fresh and inedible items dust free – everything has a purpose!!!
No print option
Submitted by Ursula Strauss – Monday, 02 August 2010
Have the option to not print till slips at stores. How many of us throw those slips away. All that paper wasted!
Smart cell-phone charger
Submitted by Karl Niebuhr – Sunday, 01 August 2010
The concept is quite simple really: Cellphones are constantly in use. South Africa has sunshine nearly daily. Equipping cellphones with solar panels so that they can charge themselves. This will save energy substantially, as over-charging is a huge problem, as well as prolonging cell-phone battery life. Small ideas, big results.
Change your Search Engine to save Electricity
Submitted by Frikkie Bezuidenhout – Saturday, 31 July 2010
We all talk about making small changes to save electricty and in effect help with reducing the effects of climate change. A very small change like changing your search engine on your computer to http://www.blackle.com will save electrity.
“Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. “Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.”
Using the same concept maybe its time to change most of our websites or displays to a black image.
Its easy and quick and small changes make a difference.
Sharing warmth
Submitted by Betty Nokuthula Masuku – Friday, 30 July 2010
During winter electricity usage increases in places like student residences. Heatera and stoves are always on. I suggest that in places where students stay in cottages, heaters should be shared. Since the rooms are small and open two heaters are able to warm up a whole cottage, but some currently use four.
Stop smoking:-)

Not only is sitting only in candlelight romantic, but you can save by not having all your lights on. Candlelight puts you in a completely different mindframe and you will learn to appreciate the silence and share some personal time with a loved one without the distractions of a tv or games, its all about love and appreciating the small things.
