USE A VANITY CHAIR
Submitted by TGAPPAS – Thursday, 12 August 2010
Send a rocket in the air with a vanity full of ice so it will cool the air!
To use the sun more
Submitted by Jaco Reinecke – Thursday, 12 August 2010
Swimming pool pumps, airconditioners and office computers all are used predominantly when the sun shines.
For computers one can revert back to the Eishkom grid if it is cloudy, rainy or dark at night. NThere’s no need to have excessive batteries for therein lie huge costs and it’s not really a earth-friendly option.
Air conditioning and pool pumps on the other hand, no sun, no operation, it is that simple.
Problem today is the costs to get it operational. I am sure there are SA companies that can make this more affordable.
Reforestation
Submitted by Vanda Chittenden – Thursday, 12 August 2010
The idea is to gather as many Scouts, Giudes etc. to work together on reclaiming dumping sites or similar areas. They could clean up these areas and plant indigenous plants, trees and bushes to revitalise the land.
make telephone directories optional at a cost
Submitted by adam – Wednesday, 11 August 2010
Those who have access to internet, cell phones and/or call centre’s hardly use telephone directories, which are made of a lot of paper and financed by state funding and advertising. I always end up sending mine to be recycled anyway. Why not make it an optional service offered by Telkom at a nominal cost and rather have a more up to date online directory, and employ more operators. Perhaps we could also reduce the exhorbitant manditory line rental costs.
Walk
Submitted by Jim Shields – Wednesday, 11 August 2010
The world around us moves too fast. Let’s take the pace out of it and walk more. You will get more exercise, cut down on carbon emissions and still get to work on time!
Stop the cut down of trees
Submitted by Mduduzi – Wednesday, 11 August 2010
I think people must stop the cutting down of trees to help in reducing global warming.
Dont buy, swop
Submitted by Lee-sa Harmse – Tuesday, 10 August 2010
Instead of buying new clothes/furniture etc. swop with friends or collegues. I do this and it’s great fun, saves money, reduces waste, gets people talking and networking, and you will be surprised at the many things you don’t want that others will love and vice versa.
stop pollution and save our ocean creatures and animals
Submitted by melanie chetty – Sunday, 08 August 2010
My idea is to print and email information about stopping pollution – if each of us makes use of bins and stops polluting we will prolong life. I let people know that every time their plastic, cardboard and paper litter gets carried by wind and rain into the drains or towards the sea. This is very sad because the fish, sharks, jellyfish, turtles, seagulls, and dolphins consume this waste which can lead to their deaths. It’s also important to note that these plastic substances never decompose and can last for thousands of years, continuing to destroy our ecology. Another reason to stop pollution and littering is to keep our country beautiful – it’s always a pleasure to live in a clean and elegant enviroment. Each one of us can make a pledge from today onwards to start keeping our environment clean and saving our beautiful environment, as well as land and sea creatures.
Container saving.
Submitted by Shona Martin – Saturday, 07 August 2010
If you keep some of the packaging containers from your grocceries, eg. yoghurt and margarine containers, they always come in handy for storing leftovers or taking lunch to work. It saves you money on buying tupperware and it’s great for the environment. You can also take your own container when you get take-outs as the boxes really do add up!
Paperless billing and banking.
Submitted by Shona Martin – Saturday, 07 August 2010
If you do more billing and banking on the internet, you’ll save paper, money and clutter.
use your garden
Submitted by liz cazin – Friday, 06 August 2010
Use the space in your garden to plant the most common herbs. Make use of pots if you do not have a garden. We all buy herbs like parsley from the supermarket and end up throwing half the packet away – make sure you have them available and fresh from your own soil.
Save electricity
Submitted by Cheryl Thompson – Friday, 06 August 2010
Boil the kettle once a day, and keep the water hot in a thermos. Use this for hot drinks etc.
