Helping to get conservation status for Berg River Estuary
Submitted by Dr Danie Schreuder – Tuesday, 25 January 2011
The Berg Estuary is currently the second most important estuary in South Africa. And yet, it still has no conservation status! This year, I won’t be a passenger like so many members of the Velddrif/Laaiplek community. As a member of the Berg Estuary Management Forum, I will use all the energy I can spare to see that by the end of 2011, the Berg Estuary is a Conservancy!
Spray bottle
Submitted by Pat – Tuesday, 25 January 2011
Instead of cans of air freshener I fill a spray bottle with water and any scented liquid like lavendar water, linen mist, lemon juice or vinegar.
Waste to Fuel Conversation
Submitted by C. Alexander Brown – Tuesday, 14 December 2010
There is an idea which has taken hold in Germany (where I spend as much time as possible) and which could be easily emulated in South Africa. This is to install on large farms and at food processing companies, relatively simple plants that can be any size from relatively small to large, that converts waste material, garbage, stalks and bushes left over from farming operation etc to methane gas or even to liquid fuel. So, South Africa could launch a nationwide campaign to this.
"ECO SPOUTS"
Submitted by Bev Hogg – Tuesday, 14 December 2010
Introduce organic vegetable growing and recycling clubs in junior schools as an optional extra mural activity. Reuse containers from home for example plastic ice cream tubs for growing veggies. Make their own compost from household waste and from the school.
Food & Trees for Africa
Submitted by Jeunesse Park – Friday, 19 November 2010
Already having planted almost 4 million trees in the townships of South Africa and supporting the development of thousands of organic food gardens over the past 20 years, Food & Trees for Africa’s slogan is ONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. The organisation was started by ONE woman.
We aim to spread the ONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE message and plant millions of trees and gardens for the poor, addressing climate change and food security, creating a greener healthier environment and changing millions of lives.
Stop using harmful chemicals
Submitted by Rosemary Walker – Monday, 25 October 2010
I use white spirit vinigar for most of my cleaning/household chores, eg. in place of fabric softner, as a rinse aid when washing dishes. Cleaning windows and mirrors (see them shine), sprayed on carpets/dogs and their bedding keeps the fleas away, even as an air freshener. A bowl left in the lounge at night will absorb the smoke odours while you sleep. There are just so many uses.
Energy Saving IT
Submitted by Jean-Pierre Damstra – Monday, 25 October 2010
As I am currently in the IT field, I propose a brilliant idea of building a Personal Computer System comprising of energy saving components which will reduce power consumption by about 20% without majorly affecting performance
Bamboo Toys
Submitted by Carmen Lewis – Saturday, 23 October 2010
Instead of buying your young children PVC (plastic toys), buy bamboo toys, which are much safer for your children. Bamboo is fast growing and when harvested it does not die but produces again. Bamboo can also be painted with water based paints. By supporting bamboo toys we as a community influence manufacturers to lower the production of plastic toys and save Earth.
Tea

If you drink heaps of tea like me, boil water and put the rest in a flask or a hot water bottle!

Instead of boiling water all the time, boil water once and use a flask or a hot water bottle to store hot water…
using gas
Submitted by adele horn – Thursday, 21 October 2010
Replacing electrical geysers and stoves with gas would reduce the amount of electricity used, which means less coal burned to make electricity, and in turn means less polution.
Waste Water
Submitted by Isabelle du Plessis – Wednesday, 20 October 2010
Link all the drain pipes of your house to a pipe network which leads to a container (buried in the ground of your garden) and install an external pump to extract the water from the container to use outside or for the garden.
